What causes blurry vision?

Blurry vision is a common symptom when your eyes become tired or irritated. It can also be caused by serious health conditions. Consult an eye doctor if you suddenly experience blurry vision.

Preeclampsia can cause blurry vision in pregnant women. This is a dangerous disease that can endanger both your health and your unborn baby's health.

1. Dry Eyes

Blurry vision may be caused by a condition or disease that affects the eye, such as diabetes. It can also be a sign for allergies, glaucoma, or eye infections. Other symptoms include red eyes, sensitivity to the light, crusty eyelids and runny nose.

Blurry eyes may be caused by inadequate tears or tears of poor quality that evaporate too fast. This condition is also called dry eye syndrome or ocular surface dysfunction.

It could be caused by a condition called presbyopia, which affects your ability to see close objects clearly. It can also be an indication of macular degeneration.

2. Irritation

Blurry vision can be common and is usually nothing to worry about. However, it can sometimes indicate a medical emergency. A stroke can cause sudden blurry vision when blood flow stops to a part of the brain. This could occur if a blood vessel is ruptured or blocked, or if a stroke affects the part of the brain that controls vision.

You can also experience blurry vision when you have an infection such as pinkeye (conjunctivitis). This infection causes the outer eye wall to swell, and produces mucus. It is usually accompanied by itchy, painful eyes and sensitivity to lights.

3. Glaucoma

Glaucoma can cause blurry vision. This happens when the fluid pressure inside the eye is high, causing damage to the optic nerve.

Blurry vision can also be a sign of diabetes or other conditions that affect the blood vessels in your eye. These include retinopathy which occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels of the retina.

People who experience sudden blurred vision should seek medical care. It can be an indication of a detached eye retina, stroke, or other conditions requiring urgent treatment.

4. Conjunctivitis

Pink eye can cause blurry vision. This is an infection of the thin, clear tissue that covers the white eyeballs and lines the insides of the eyelids. It is highly contagious and spreads through sneezing or coughing as well as direct contact with those who have the disease.

Blurred vision is not a common pink eye symptom, but it can be a sign your condition has worsened and you need additional treatment. If you experience blurry vision along with other symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Eye strain and refractive errors such as nearsightedness, distance sightedness and Astigmatism can also cause blurry vision. These conditions can be corrected by prescription glasses or contact lenses.

5. Eye infections

Blurry vision may be a sign it's time to get new glasses or contacts, but it can also be a symptom that there is a health issue. When blurry vision occurs suddenly, it's important to consult a doctor.

Some common eye infections like bacterial conjunctivitis or allergic conjunctivitis can cause blurry vision. Pink eye, a viral infection that causes itchy eyes, can also cause blurry vision.

Blurry vision can be a sign of a medical emergency. It could be a stroke, or a shorter version called a transient ischemic episode (TIA). A TIA may result in permanent vision loss.

6. Retinal migraines

Blurry vision is not only an inconvenience, it can also be a sign of a more serious medical condition. Sudden blurry eyes can be a sign of a detached eye retina, stroke or other conditions requiring urgent medical attention.

When the retina (the thin, back-of-the-eye layer) pulls away the blood vessels that provide it with oxygen, a detached retina occurs. Untreated, it can cause permanent vision loss.

A retinal headache is a condition which causes a sudden blurring in one eye, along with a throbbing pain on the same side of the head. It can also be accompanied with a curtain of flashing lights or swirling floaters.

7. Stroke

We take our eyesight for granted, until it begins to blur. Blurry vision is usually a sign that there is a problem. You may need to get a new prescription for contacts or glasses. It could also be an indication of a more severe condition such as cataracts.

Blurred vision is also a sign of a stroke. After a stroke, people with visual processing issues may find that they bump into objects on one side of the body or are unaware of things in the room.
